BARANGAY POBLACION BAJO, SERGIO OSMENA SR., ZAMBOANGA DEL NORTE
The group is assigned at Barangay PoblacionBajo, Municipality of Sergio Osmeña, Zamboanga Del Norte. It is a barangay located near the “sentro” where the municipal hall and other municipal offices are located.
It was under the leadership of then Mayor Bienvinido Andilab that the Centro or Sibulan was divided into two: Poblacion Alto and PoblacionBajo.
PoblacionBajo was then created on September 14, 1964. At this time, the Tenientedel Barrio was Mr. Leoncio Arellano, Sr. He had councilors and other officials. The primary or main occupation of the inhabitants is farming, mostly kaingineros. Their principal products are abaca, coffee, corn and upland rice.
The natives known as the Subanen are half of the occupants and the other half is composed of Cebuanos, Boholanos and Siquihodnons. Before, there was no road, so the farmers transport their farm products by horses and carabaos which take them half a day to reach the market place where they can sell their farm products and also buy all their necessities good for one week.
In 1973, there was a barangay election and the elected barangay captain was Mrs. Estelita C. Jimenez. In 1986, there was a snap election and Mr. Romeo P. Maghinay was designated as the OIC of the barangay. Then, after the EDSA Revolution in 1987, once again, there was an election in the barangay for the position of kagawads, and among the runners, person with the highest number of votes was declared as the barangay captain, and it was Mr. Romeo P. Maghinay. He served the barangay from that time up to August 15, 2002.
On May 14, 2002, another barangay election was held in which Mr. Jaime S. Reyes won. He began his term as barangay captain on August 15, 2002.
It is surrounded by the following barangays: Barangay Poblacion Alto at its north, Barangay Sinai at its east, Barangay Liwanag is at its west and Barangay Venus is its south. The surrounding municipalities are President Manuel Roxas, Katipunan, Polanco, Piñan, and Mutia at its north; Jose Dalman and Siayan at its west; the province of Zamboanga del Sur at its south; and Misamis Occidental at its east.
Barangay PoblacionBajo has a land area of 344, 751. 4 square meters with “rolling” geographical landscape as the people describe. It has 198 households with 1,155 inhabitants and has more or less 665 electorates. Up to this time, the main occupation of the people is farming or agriculture. In farming, some families were able to generate income which enabled their children proceed schooling and produced professionals.
